Celiac Disease: One Man’s Story
David had been having stomach issues since age ten. At age 19 he was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and prescribed over-the-counter, Imodium. He was told IBS is often the result of a very busy lifestyle and poor eating habits. After following instructions, his stomach was still bothering him.
“David’s story is not unusual. Many patients with celiac disease suffer with chronic, nonspecific and unexplained abdominal complaints. With appropriate testing, celiac disease can be properly diagnosed and treated. Therapy is directed at avoidance of offending food products,” says Dr. Stephen Geier, of the The Endoscopy Center of Long Island.
After meeting with Dr. Geier, David had bloodwork, an endoscopy, and colonoscopy and was diagnosed with celiac disease. David was treated by switching to a gluten-free diet.
“Since I’ve gone gluten-free, my life has improved tremendously. I can now go out with my friends and not have to be so conscious of where the closest bathroom is. Inaddition, my concentration on work-related tasks have improved significantly,” says David.
The fact that eating gluten-free has become a fad, has worked in David’s favor. High demand has made gluten-free products tastier and more affordable in recent years. Find recipes.
When asked about his plans for the future, David shares more.
My wife and I plan to start a family, and although research has shown some people with celiac disease have problems with infertility, I’ve been told is not an issue as long as I follow my gluten-free diet.
